McNulty was a student at Portobello High School. He played on the youth teams of Celtic, Hutchison Vale and Hibernian. He felt that he was not going to make it as a football player and that “it was over” after being released by Hibernian. At 16, he signed for Livingston’s second-tier club. However, the club was immediately delegated to the lowest level of Scottish league football. This gave him an opportunity to play senior football sooner than he would have otherwise. After being a substitute in a 3-0 win over Montrose on 31 October 2009, he made his goalscoring debut. He played nine games in Livingston’s debut season. Livingston were promoted to the top level of Scottish league football. His prolific goalscoring record at Under-19 level earned him a three-year contract. He made just five league appearances the following season in Second Division. However, the club was promoted again.
McNulty was Livingston’s top goal scorer in 2011-12, scoring 16 goals across all competitions. His performance attracted attention from clubs south of the border like Derby County and Sheffield United. On 25 July 2013, he signed a two-year extension to his Livingston contract. His last campaign with the Lions was his best, scoring 17 league goals in 35 games.
On 31 August 2016, McNulty joined Bradford City on a season-long loan deal. He was recalled by Sheffield United on 2 January 2017.
