After ten years of freelance editing, which included time on Puffin’s Fighting Fantasy gamebook series. In 1997, he returned back to Games Workshop to help create the Black Library fiction imprint. He was first an editor and then he became the publisher and general manager of the BL Publishing imprints. This included Solaris Books and Black Industries.
Angry Robot was acquired by Osprey Publishing in September 2010. In October 2011, Gascoigne won the World Fantasy Special Award—Professional for Angry Robot, presented at the World Fantasy Convention in San Diego, California. In 2014 Angry Robot was sold by Osprey to Watkins Media. In 2016 Gascoigne won the British Fantasy Award in the category Best Independent Press, again for Angry Robot.
Gascoigne and Warhammer experts Rick Priestley, Andy Jones, worked together to develop the idea for the Black Library. The result was Inferno! As a result, the magazine Inferno was born in July 1997. Gascoigne was the general manger of Games Workshop’s BL Publishing Division, which made books, board games and RPGs.

Gascoigne was the editor or developer of many of GW’s most classic boardgames during the mid-1980s. He also created the background for Dark Future. This boardgame is car-based and was made after the cancellation of a cyberpunk- themed roleplaying board game.
He was an editor on the children’s TV series Fighting Fantasy, but he only published one gamebook as an author. It was Battleblade Warrior. It was the 31st of 59 books in the original series. It was published in 1988. He also wrote two other novels and five books under Advanced Fighting Fantasy, including Titan, which is an encyclopedia about the fictional world where most of the gamebooks were set.
He left this post at the end of March 2008 when Games Workshop downsized its staff. It was announced on 11th Sept 2008 that he had joined HarperCollins to create a new science fiction & fantasy imprint to be called Angry Robot.
