On 9 December 2011, she announced her retirement from competitive swimming due to thoracic outlet syndrome.

In 2000, Jonkers was awarded an Australian Sports Medal. Premier Peter Beattie named her the 2005 Queensland Young Achiever at the age of 23. She was the inaugural recipient of Cosmopolitan magazine’s “fun fearless woman award”, which recognizes Australia’s most inspiring women for encouraging others to follow their dreams. Cosmopolitan featured her on page 76 in the first month she was recognized. She set up the “Sporting Dreams Fund”, which supports people with disabilities in their sport talents. She was the Sporting Wheelie of the year by the Sporting Wheelies and Disabled Association in 2010. She was also an Australia Day Ambassador in 2011.

Marayke Caroline Jonkers, born 13 September 1981, is an Australian Paralympic swimmer. She was awarded two bronze medals at Athens Paralympics 2004 and a silver medal 2008 Beijing Paralympics 2008. She also won a bronze medal at Budapest ITU Triathlon World Championships 2010.

Jonkers began representing Queensland in her 12th year. She first represented Australia in 1999 when she won a gold medal at the FESPIC Games. She placed sixth and fourth at the 2000 Sydney Games. This was her first Paralympics. She won two silver medals in swimming at the 2002 IPC Swimming World Championships. Jonkers won two bronze medals at the 2004 Athens Paralympics in the Women’s 150 m Individual Medley SM4 event and the Women’s 50 m breaststroke SB3 event. She was Australia’s oldest swimmer and competed in the 2008 Beijing Paralympics. With a time of 3 minutes 28.88, she won a silver medal in the Women’s 150 m Individual Medley SM4 competition. She set a world record for the 150m individual medley at Australia’s short course championships in Hobart in 2009. She competed in the Queensland Swimming Age Multi Class Championships 2010. She finished third in the 100 m breaststroke event for women, with a time 02:50.59. She also participated in the 2010 Telstra Australian Championships, the Over 12 Years 150 m Medley event. Her time was 4:07.51. She was also a finalist in the 50 m breaststroke event for the Over 12 year olds. She was also the Australian flag bearer at the 2010 IPC Swimming World Championships, Eindhoven (the Netherlands), where she won a bronze in the 50m breaststroke SB3 and was part the 20-point 4x50m relay team, which broke an Oceania record.

Jonkers’ first paratriathlon competition was as social event related to the 2009 ITU Triathlon World Championships in the Gold Coast. She became Australia’s first female paratriathlete and paratriathlon medallist when she competed in the 2010 championships in Budapest, winning a bronze medal in the TRI-1 classification in a time of 2:12:40, eleven minutes better than her previous personal best. She had an Australian Institute of Sport Paralympic swimming scholarship.
