After a brief spell with FC Dinamo Tbilisi in the Georgian Erovnuli Liga, Onwu returned home to his country and its third tier. He went on to represent UCAM Murcia CF, Lorca FC, and Lleida Esportiu. Onwu was born in Tudela (Navarre) to a Nigerian mother and a Spanish father. He was raised in Valtierra and began playing with Club Atletico Valtierrano. In 2006, he made his senior debut with CD Tudelano. He signed with CA Osasuna in Navarre the following year, was assigned to its B team and served two loans in lower leagues.
Onwu scored 11 goals during the 2011-12 season in 30 matches played with the third-level reserves. On March 11, 2012, he made his debut with La Liga and his first team. He was a substitute in the second half of a 2-1 win against Athletic Bilbao. Two rounds later, he made his debut in the second round against Athletic Bilbao. He won 2-0 away against Levante UD.
