She was among Ranomi Kromowidjojo and Femke Hennemskerk who started her 2008 Summer Olympics in the heats for the 4×100 freestyle relay. Inge Dekker, Marleen Veldhuis and Schreuder replaced them for the final. Van Rooijen witnessed her teammates win and was awarded a Gold Medal. She swam with Heemskerk and Saskia De Jonge in the heats for the 4×200 m freestyle, but failed to qualify for final.

After missing out on all the 2005 and 2004 international tournaments, she returned to Budapest for the 2006 European Aquatics Championships. She began training with Nationaal Zweminstituut Amsterdam, where Martin Truijens is her coach. She finished 11th in the 4×200 m freestyle relay. She didn’t meet the qualification standards but was still selected for the 2007 World Aquatics Championships. She started in the 4×200 m freestyle relay, which reached the finals and finished third.

Van Rooijen was a senior international athlete when she competed at the European LC Championships 1999, Istanbul, Turkey. She finished 4th in both the 4 x 100 m medley relay and the 4 x 100 m fess freestyle. She returned to the European LC Championships in Helsinki, Finland one year later. She started in the 100 m and 200m freestyles, finishing 17th and 24th respectively. A 7th place finish was achieved in the 4×200 m freestyle relay. In September 2000, she participated in the Sydney Olympics. She won a silver medal with Inge deBruijn, Wilma Van Hofwegen and Thamar Henken in the 4 x 100m freestyle relay. She also finished 11th in the 4×200 m freestyle.

Van Rooijen moved to the United States to study at the University of Miami in January 2001. She was able to keep her spot in the national team at the 2001 World Aquatics Championships, Fukuoka (Japan), which proved to be a disappointment. She and her team were eliminated from the heats in both relays (4 x 100m and 4x 200m freestyle). In 2002, she reached her first final in Berlin, at the 2002 European Aquatics Championships. She finished 8th in 200 m freestyle. She also won a bronze medal in the 4×100 m freestyle relay with Chantal Groot, Marleen Veldhuis and Wilma Van Hofwegen. A 5th place finish was achieved in the 4×200 m freestyle. She finished 4th in 4×100 m freestyle at the 2003 World Aquatics Championships, Barcelona. She was also 7th in the 4×200 freestyle. She returned to Dordrecht after three years and was reunited with Topzwemmen West-Nederland. However, she failed to qualify for 2004 Summer Olympics because of a serious shoulder injury.

In 2008, she took part in the 2008 European Aquatics Championships in front of her home crowd in Eindhoven. Individually she started in the 200 m freestyle where she was eliminated in the heats but qualified for the 2008 Summer Olympics in the 4 × 200 m relay. A time-trial in the 100 m freestyle secured her a spot in the olympic 4 × 100 m freestyle team. She also started in the 4 × 200 m freestyle but she and Linda Bank were replaced by Inge Dekker and Marleen Veldhuis for the final.
