Banaue, her younger sister, would go on to become an opera singer in New York City. Her family fled the Philippines during the Marcos regime in 1969 and moved to China in 1971. After the People Power Revolution, which saw Ferdinand Marcos’s fall from power in 1986, her family and she returned to the Philippines. She was born in China and became fluent in Mandarin Chinese, Filipino, English.
She won the Art Association of the Philippines Grand Prize in 1992 for Trouble in Paradise. Voice from the Underworld was her second poetry book and a finalist in the 2001 National Book Award.
Miclat was made a Fellow of the University of the Philippines National Writers Workshop and received an award for her Filipino play. She was also a Fellow at the Silliman National Writers Workshop.
