In 1977, Kohrs invited all commercially registered tattooists in Germany to an information meeting in Hanover. “At that time there were throughout the country, only 14 self-employed tattoo artist.”
He was twelve when he bought his first tattoo. Herbert Hoffmann tattooed him in 1975. Horst Streckenbach, a nationally-recognized integrated tattoo artist, studied Kohrs as a master student in 1975. He began tattooing professionally in 1976. He opened his Hanover studio in 1977 and built a new rotary tattoo device in 1978. Samuel O’Reilly invented it and the tattoo artists made improvements over time. Kohrs tattooed Rio Reiser and Rudolf Schenker, as well as other notable artists, musicians, and celebrities at the time.

- He has been tattooing since 1974. He was a student at Horst Streckenbach (August 5, 1926 to June 27, 2001). They created the barbell piercing system in 1975. Kohrs created a rotary tattoo machine that included an electric motor and ink reservoir. Kohrs established the first German Tattoo Artist Association in 1977. In 1990, Kohrs quit tattooing and started studying economics.
On the German Norddeutscher Rundfunk television program Nordschaumagazin in 1975, Kohrs met Prof. Timm Urichs, a well-known German artist. Ulrich was approached by Manfred Kohrs in Hanover about Streckenbach. He wanted to be tattooed in an art project. The words “THE EXTEND” refer to the eyelid. That art-project was created by Streckenbach and Ulrichs in 1981. “Once the curtain is finally pulled down, when my eyesight has disappeared and my eyes are closed for ever rest, the pulled-down lid will reveal the last punch line, in my opinion quite memorable: The “Last Picture Show”, which is presented with a weeping eye and a laughing eye with a wink. This was the end of a life, and a life performance meant to be dramatic and spectacular. From 1977 to 1981, Timm Ulrichs created Kohrs a variety of projects that dealt with tattoos. Kohrs began drawing cartoons for magazines in 1978. Kohrs has been President of the Wedemark art association since 2011.

Manfred Kohrs is founder and since 1997 chairman of the board of the Institut für deutsche Tattoo-Geschichte, Ole Wittmann executive board member and research director. The non-profit association Institut für deutsche Tattoo- Geschichte e.V. (IDTG) is a close partner of the research and exhibition project Nachlass Warlich. The purpose of the IDTG is to promote science, research, art and culture as well as education and mediation. Since an interdisciplinary approach to tattoo research is of great importance, scientists from different disciplines should be supported in their research on tattoos. The purpose of the statutes is realized by organizing scientific events and research projects on German tattoo history in an international context. The results are to be published in publications and other media in order to make them accessible to a broad public.
