Manfred Ferdinand Buchroithner, born 17 December 1950 in Wels (Upper Austria), is an Austrian cartographer and developer of autostereoscopic Cartographic Visualisations. He is also a geologist, mountain researcher, and mountaineer.
Buchroithner’s major research areas include true-3D visualizations of geoinformation, high mountain cartography (especially multitemporal 3D glacier mapping using spaceborne remote sensors and AI methods) and remote sensing cartography. Buchroithner also studies dynamic cartography with remote sensing. He initiated the first European (civilian-based) real-time transmissions of true-3D geodata to stereoscopic vision in 2006. His most notable contribution is the link of a 3D-model of the Dachstein Southface and climbers’ GPS data to support mountain rescue operations in poor visibility. He led many scientific expeditions to high alpine regions around the globe. He produced the first holographic relief map with motion-animated labels in 1997/98 and it was displayed at the 1999 International Cartographic Conference, Ottawa. Two international patents were granted to him for his innovations in true-3D cartography using lenticular foil technology, in the late 1990s.
Manfred Buchroithner was appointed scientific advisor to the Tibetan Mount Everest National Park Qomolangma National Nature Preserve. (QNNP) in 1992. He was Vice President of the European Association of Remote Sensing Laboratories, 1993-1997. In addition to chairing a SIG about landslides, he was also the Chair of a SIG for mudflows. From 1999 to 2001, he was the Chairman of EURO- STRIM (Association for the Establishment of a European Master’s and Doctorate in Space Technologies for Risk Management). Buchroithner was Chairman of the German Society for the Support of Geodesy and Geoinformation in 2011. In his capacity, he initiated the Wissenschaftspreis der Deutschen Geodatischen Kommission, a Science Award of the German Geodetic Commission, for highly qualified postdoctoral scientists. Buchroithner played a key role in the founding of three Commissions of International Cartographic Association (ICA), including the Commission on Mountain Cartography (1995), Commission on Planetary Cartography (1995), and the Commission on Cartography in Early Warning and Crisis Management (2003).
