Born and raised in Bangor, Maine, Medwed received her B.A. with honors from Simmons College and lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She has taught fiction writing at The Cambridge Center for Adult Education since 1979, mentored in the MFA in Creative Writing program at Lesley University from 1986–88, and was the 1996 Robert M. Gay Memorial Lecturer at the Department of English at Simmons College. Medwed continues to give readings and lectures and participate in library panels and book festivals.
