Hale was the daughter of Diane Hale, and James Hale. She is the youngest of her two daughters. Hale was born in the AME Church, where she started singing at age 5. At age 7, she began playing the piano and at nine years old, she started writing her own songs. Through high school, she was involved in school choirs, community theatre productions, and school theatre productions. She was the leading role in two high school productions, and she had supporting roles the two other years. After graduating in 2003 from Dos Pueblos High School, Hale went to Azusa Pacific University. There she studied vocal performance (opera), with a minor of musical theater. Hale stated many times that her opera training gave her the ability to perform pop music for longer periods. Hale took a semester leave during her junior year to perform live and record an album. To gain experience, she performed at Los Angeles venues such as The Knitting Factory. In order to finish her degree, she returned to Azusa Pacific University in the following year. At the age of 20, she graduated with a bachelor’s in vocal performance and a minor musical theatre.

John Volk, Hale’s husband, was married to her in December 2009. They were married in Santa Monica, California on December 22, 2011 at First A.M.E. church. They now reside in North Hills, Los Angeles. Volk was a former corporate lawyer at Gibson Dunn. He is currently the Executive Director for Worldwide Television Distribution at Sony Pictures. Together, the couple co- own JMV Entertainment’s music agency.

Hale relocated to Chicago in January 2012 to be with her now husband while he attended law school at the University of Chicago. While in Chicago, Hale signed with talent agency Actors Talent Group and pursued acting in addition to music. Immediately following the show’s closing, Hale was cast as a supporting role in her first feature film, Oranges written and produced by Corrina Crade and directed by Elen Santana. The film starred Brant Daughterty and Crade as the lead couple. Hale also co-wrote the theme song for the movie entitled “Flashback” with Lena Leon.
