Venville owns three books of photography. Layers (2003) contains Venville’s personal, advertising, celebrity and fashion photography. Lucha Loco (2006) contains over 100 portraits of lucha libero wrestlers, taken during a 2005 Mexican trip. Schilt Publishing published his third monograph, The Women of Casa X. It features portraits of elderly prostitutes in Casa Xochiquetzal, the notorious Tepito district of Mexico City.
Silent Film (1997) was his first short film. It was an 11-minute documentary about the love story between his deaf parents. He directed two documentaries about actresses with small roles in short films: Remembering Sister Ruth (1997) about Kathleen Byron, the troubled nun Sister Ruth in Black Narcissus (1947) and Remembering Miss Torso (2004) about Georgine Darcy who played Miss Torso, the voluptuous neighbor in Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window (1954).

Venville was born in Birmingham to deaf parents. His uncle described him as “caught between the hearing and deaf worlds.” Venville was a student at Solihull College (1981-83) as well as Polytechnic of Central London (1983-1986). He graduated with honors from both with a BA and a certificate in film, video and photographic arts.
He broke out in 1991 with a Wrangler campaign and became a highly-respected fashion and advertising photographer. He began to direct commercials in 1992 with an Audi advertisement.
Venville initially turned down a number of offers to direct feature films, including Coyote Ugly, because he wished his feature film debut to be a planned movie called Deaf Road, about his uncle’s attempts to lose his virginity in Tangiers. It would be entirely in sign language, which Orlando Bloom had pledged to learn to star in the film. Venville’s feature film debut was 44 Inch Chest (2009), a gangster film starring Ray Winstone, John Hurt, Tom Wilkinson and Ian McShane. It reunited the writers and some of the cast of an earlier British gangster film, Sexy Beast (2000). He also directed Henry’s Crime (2010), a romantic comedy starring Keanu Reeves, James Caan, and Vera Farmiga.
