Maiken Caspersen Falla is one of the most popular and richest Cross- Country Skier who was born on August 13, 1990 in Lørenskog, Norway. Maiken Caspersen Fallsa, a Norwegian cross-country skier, was born 13 August

  1. She specializes in sprinting and short distance races. She was the 2014 Olympic individual sprint champion and a three-time Olympic medalist. She was the 2017 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships individual sprint World champion and she successfully defended her World title in 2019. Falla, who has been awarded three consecutive Sprint World Cup Crystal Globes, has won a total of five and four bronze medals at World Championships over her career. She is currently sixth in the overall World Cup standings, having finished sixth in both 2014-15 and 2015-16 World Cup seasons.

Falla began 2012/13 season in good form, with one win and three podiums in her first three sprint races. In Canmore, she also achieved a podium in a 10-km mass start race. However, her performance dropped in January and she was unable to make it to the top 10 for the rest of the World Cup season. Falla was able to win her first individual World Championship medal at the 2013 FIS Nordic World ski Championships in Val di Fiemme with a bronze medal in individual sprint. Ingvild Luftstad Ostberg was her teammate for the team sprint race. However, the pair finished fourth due to Ostberg’s slip in the penultimate leg.

In 2014/15 season, Falla recorded four World Cup podiums and her only victory of the season once again came in Drammen. She finished the season in third place in sprint rankings behind her teammates Bjørgen and Østberg. At the 2015 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Falun, Falla earned her first World Championship gold medal in the team sprint event with Østberg, but once again she had to settle for bronze medal in the individual sprint behind Marit Bjørgen and Stina Nilsson.

In 2016/17 season, Falla defended her sprint World Cup title despite being outsprinted by Sweden’s Stina Nilsson in most of the sprint races. Although Falla has only one sprint victory compared to Nilsson’s six, she took the advantage in sprint rankings when Nilsson opted not to ski in Toblach and she maintained it until the end of the season. At the 2017 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti, Falla took the gold medal in the individual sprint in a similar fashion to her Olympic title and won the only sprint title that has eluded her in her career. She set the fastest time in the qualification and won every heat she competed during the process while her archrival Nilsson was disqualified in the semifinal. By winning the gold medal, she became the second female skier to win Olympic, World and World Cup sprint title after her compatriot Marit Bjørgen who reached that triple crown in 2010 but Falla has the distinction of holding those three honours at the same time. During the championships, Falla added two more gold medals to her medal tally and finished the championships with three gold medals. Along with Heidi Weng, she once again brought the World team sprint title to Norway. She was also the member of the Norwegian relay team that won the gold medal in 4 × 5 km relay, running the opening classical leg.

Falla won her first World Cup win in a freestyle sprint race at Rogla, Slovenia, in the 2011/12 season. She was also on four additional podiums and finished the season second in the sprint rankings, behind Kikkan Randall.

Falla’s World Cup debut was made in Kuusamo, 29 November 2008. She finished 22nd in a classic sprint race. In her second World Cup race, she reached her first podium at the World Cup in Dusseldorf. Falla made a promising start and was awarded a spot at the individual sprint race in the 2009 FIS Nordic Ski Championships in Liberec. However, she did not qualify for the quarter finals as she finished 39th in the qualifying round. Falla was unable to make it to the World Cup podium after a podium performance in her first season. She was sixth in the classic sprint in Kuusamo, which helped her secure a place on the Norwegian Olympic team for Vancouver’s 2010 Winter Olympics. She finished 20th at the Olympics in the individual sprint event.

Falla was back on the World Cup podium in 2010/11 season, finishing third at Otepaa’s classic sprint. She then finished second in Drammen. She was a medal favorite at the home World Championships in Oslo Holmenkollen after she won two podiums in her last two sprints. After setting the third fastest qualifying time, Falla fell in her quarter final heat. She was eliminated from that stage of the World Championships after she finished third in her heat. Falla’s disappointment in the individual sprint meant that she wasn’t initially considered for the team sprint. However, Marit Bjorgen was withdrawn and Falla was chosen for the event with Astrid Uhrenholdt Jaksen. The pair won a bronze medal, behind the Finnish and Swedish teams.

Falla has not started well to 2013/14 season and she managed to reach only one podium in World Cup sprints prior to the Olympics. At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi Falla won the gold medal in individual sprint despite more than one year without a victory in the World Cup. She dominated the event from start to finish by setting the fastest time in the qualifying round and winning every heat she competed. She was left out in the team sprint since her teammates Marit Bjørgen and Ingvild Flugstad Østberg has shown better performance in classical discipline throughout the season. Although the reason was understandable for many, some people – including Bente Skari – criticized the decision of putting Bjørgen into the team instead of Olympic champion Falla. After the Olympics, Falla earned her sole World Cup victory of the season in the prestigious classical sprint race in Drammen.
