Mahlon Mitchell, born February 24, 1977, is an American firefighter who is currently the President of Professional Fire Fighters of Wisconsin. He was the youngest and the first African American to assume the office of president on January 12, 2011. Mitchell is the President of PFFW. He also serves as president of “Sable Flames”, the African American firefighters of Madison Fire Department. Mitchell was unsuccessful in his bid to become Wisconsin’s Governor in 2018. He finished second.

Mitchell was sought by national media to criticize Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker’s changes in collective bargaining. This prompted protests in Madison for weeks.

Mitchell ran for the Democratic nomination to Governor in 2018. He finished second in the primary to Tony Evers.

Mitchell was born in Milwaukee, and grew up near Delavan in Wisconsin. Mitchell was a street outreach coordinator that linked at-risk youth to community services. Late October 2011 saw the rise of a movement to draft Mitchell to challenge Walker for the office as Governor of Wisconsin. Mitchell responded by stating that he would be open to running in a recall election. Mitchell declared his candidacy to be Lieutenant Governor of Wisconsin against Rebecca Kleefisch on March 19, 2012. Mitchell won the Democratic Primary but was defeated by Kleefisch with 1,156,520 votes. Mitchell was awarded an honorary degree by the National Labor College Maritime Institute of Graduate Studies in 2013.
