Mah-Rukh Ali, a Pakistani-born and raised child, was born in Oslo. She has three brothers. She wrote Den sure virkeligheten (lit. The Sour Reality” was published in 1996. The book focuses on her experiences growing up as a Muslim girl in Oslo’s west end. It also discusses how she felt Norwegian, but was treated differently. In response to her book, she received many racist threats and letters. After that, she was invited to write a column for Klassekampen. From 2000 to 2002 she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Lahore. She also studied journalism at Volda University College between 2002 and 2004.
Ali began her career at NRK radio news in 2003. She later became a reporter for Dagsrevyen (NRK’s main news broadcast) in autumn 2005. In autumn 2005, she was assigned to Pakistan as a reporter by the NRK. She also worked as a reporter for Aftenposten, and Dagbladet daily newspapers.
