She also held the directorship of a pharmaceutical firm and managed her own consulting business.

In May 2016, it was reported by police that Throup was among a group of Conservative MPs under investigation for allegedly exceeding the legal limit for constituency election campaign expenses. The Crown Prosecution Service stated that although there was evidence of inaccuracies in spending returns, the service did not consider it sufficient to warrant further action.

Throup supported remaining within the European Union (EU) in the 2016 EU membership referendum.

In September 2017, Throup was criticised for claiming expenses for first class tickets when she travelled by rail, despite official guidance from parliamentary watchdog IPSA – set up in the wake of the 2009 expenses scandal – saying politicians should “consider value for money” when booking tickets. She was revealed to be one of only 22 MPs who never travelled standard class. She argued that her claims were permissible within the expenses rules and that the first class tickets were cheaper than some standard class tickets available.

Throup was then elected Conservative candidate for Erewash. She was elected MP for the constituency with 20,636 votes (42.7%) and a majority vote of 3,584 in the 2015 general elections. She was a member of the Health Select Committee as well as the Scottish Affairs Committee during the 2015-17 parliament.

Margaret Ann Throup, born 27 January 1957, is a British Conservative Party politician. She was a former business consultant and biomedical researcher. In the 2015 general election, she was elected the first Member of Parliament (MP), for Erewash. In the 2017 general election, she was reelected and again in the 2019 general elections.

Throup was unsuccessfully elected the Conservative candidate for Colne Valley, West Yorkshire, in 2005’s general election. She later moved to Solihull, West Midlands, and was again unsuccessfully elected as the Conservative candidate in Solihull’s constituency in the 2010 general elections.

In January 2016, a Labour-proposed amendment that would have required private landlords to make their homes “fit for human habitation” was rejected by 312 votes to 219. According to Parliament’s register of interests, Throup was one of 72 MPs who voted against the amendment who derived an income from a property. Communities minister Marcus Jones said the Government believed homes should be fit for human habitation but did not want to pass the new law that would explicitly require it.
