In 1977, during her bachelor’s degree, she held her first exhibition under the name “Scissors”. The exhibition featured ten cartoon drawings as well as an artist book.

Lara has created many pieces in a variety of media throughout her career. Tijeras in San Carlos (1977), Glaciers at the Visual Arts Centre Austin, Texas (2010), Titubeos at the Mexican Art Gallery (2011), and Animations: Magali Lar at the Amparo Museum Puebla (2012) are some of her most significant individual exhibitions. Tijeras was her first solo exhibition. Ten drawings were accompanied by text in comic book and artist’s books style. In the seventies, she worked for the Marco Group, and later collaborated with Non-Group. More recently, in 2014, BATIENTE 0.5, at Casa del Lago. Lara has also participated in collaborative projects like The Age of Discrepancy. Art and Visual Culture of Mexico 1968-1997. This was held at the University Museum of Science and Arts Campus (2007). As well as A Possible Day in collaboration with Javier Torres Maldonado at La Muse en Circuit. Centre National de Creation Musicale, Paris (2011). She also participated in the 5th Ibero-American Art Biennial (1986), the Third Monterrey Biennial (1996) and the V Biennial of Standards in Tijuana (Baja California (2008). Since 1994, she has been a beneficiary of the National System of Creators of the National Council for Culture and the Arts. In the framework of the International Fair of Artist’s Book, LIA, she was awarded the Artist’s Book Award for Que horte En ti lo que pertene. Her work can be found in many museums and galleries including the Carrillo Gil Museum of Art and New York’s Museum of Modern Art. She has worked with others on projects involving drawing, digital graphics and animation in recent years. She is also interested in how contemporary graphic thinking can be presented in different media and has worked with different materials. She currently collaborates on editorial projects for Ediciones Acapulco, and she is also a counsellor at Casa del Lago (UNAM). She is very interested in artist books. She organized several artist book events in the United States and Brazil. She published visual poetry in specialized magazines during the eighties. She started to explore engraving and painting, but she moved away from the group to pursue a more personal investigation. She has been involved in projects that include drawing, digital graphics and ceramics, as well as animation. She is fascinated by the many ways contemporary graphic thinking can be presented in various supports using different materials.

In 1981, she participated as curator in the first exhibition of contemporary Mexican women artists that took place in the “Künstlerhaus Bethanien” in Western Berlin.
