Maarten Martens, a former professional Belgian footballer, was born 2 July 1984. He plays as either a winger or attacking midfielder. Martens is well-known for his creativity and passing, as well as his flair and dribbling ability. Martens has previously played for the Belgian clubs Anderlecht and RKC Waalwijk as well as the AZ, AZ, Cercle Brugge and PAOK in Greece. He has also represented Belgium at international level.

Martens was a RKC player and earned Jean-Francois de Sart’s attention. He was the captain of the Belgium U21 soccer team. The young midfielder was part a strong generation that included Vincent Kompany and Marouane Faellaini, Jan Vertonghen and Thomas Vermaelen. He was elected to the U-21 European Championships 2007. The semifinals were reached by the young Belgians, who were then promoted to the Olympic Games 2008. Belgium was promoted to Group C with Brazil and advanced to the quarterfinals at the Olympics. Surprisingly, Belgium beat Italy 3-2 to reach the quarterfinals. Belgium lost 4-1 to Nigeria in the semi-final. Brazil beat the Red Devils 3-0 in the final for the bronze medal. Contrary to the poor performance of the first team, the young Devils performed well. Martens was one of many players who were promoted to the first team by Martens after the Olympic Games. However, Martens did not receive a permanent call throughout his career. He is still the Belgia U21 player with the most appearances. Martens made his debut for Belgium on February 7, 2007. Rene Vandereycken was the one who chose Martens for the first team. Martens’ debut was short lived after he sustained several injuries. Frank Vercauteren called Martens for the Kirin Cup in Japan in 2009. Dick Advocaat was his coach and he replaced Wesley Sonck in the last international match.

On 15 January 2014, Martens signed a contract with Superleague Greece team PAOK FC until 30 June 2016. After a year with PAOK, Maartens signs on loan with Belgian club Cercle Brugge for the rest of the 2014-15 season, but after the relegation of the club he returned to PAOK. On 5 August 2015, Martens reached an agreement with PAOK to terminate his contract with the club.

Maarten Martens was born in Eeklo and began football in Klauwaerts Bassevelde. Martens, a young man of eighteen joined RSC Anderlecht’s youth team. He was a teammate, among others, of Mark De Man, Urko Pardo and Xavier Chen over the years. Roda expressed interest in Martens in 2003, but he chose to remain with the team that he loved. Martens was a member of the first team in 2003/04, but he didn’t have many opportunities to show his worth. Hugo Broos was the coach. A year later, Martens made his first appearance in the UEFA Champions League. In April 2011 Martens was the victim of a charge from his compatriot and former teammate Gill Swerts. On his return in August 2011 Martens immediately scored an important goal in the match against PSV. Two weeks later, Martens was injured again. Only in December 2011, he succeeded to come back in the first team. In August 2012, after the departure of Niklas Moisander and Rasmus Elm, Martens became the captain of the club. Martens played the first few games of the season, but after a serious knee injury missed the rest of the season.
