Ma Qinghua, simplified Chinese: Ma Qing Hua; traditional Chinese: Ma Qing Hua) was born 25 December 1987 in Shanghai and is a Chinese race driver who competes in the 2019-20 Formula E season of Nio 333 Racing.
Ma competed in the 2013 World Touring Car Championships for Citroen Total, WTCC in the fourth car. He won the Race of Russia’s second round, becoming the first Chinese driver ever to win an FIA World Championship race. Ma also scored the fastest lap in Race of China, Shanghai and finished 13th in the championship. He was awarded a full-time seat for 2015. He won the Race of Portugal’s second round and finished 4th in the drivers championship. He was not retained for 2016.
Ma became the first Chinese driver to win an FIA World Championship race when he won race two of the 2014 FIA WTCC Race of Russia.
In 2016, Ma replaced Salvador Duran in the 2015-16 Formula E season for Team Aguri. He retired from his first ePrix but finished the last 3 races, albeit out of the points. In the next season, Ma was signed by TeCheetah but was replaced by former Haas F1 driver Esteban Gutiérrez following a disappointing series of performances in the first three races of the season.
Ma was included in the HRT F1 driver training programme on 5 April 2012. He became the first Chinese-born driver to drive a Formula One vehicle at an FIA sanctioned event. This milestone is described as “heralding a significant step for Chinese motorsport”. Ma was also the first Chinese driver to participate in a Grand Prix weekend. He replaced Narain Karthikeyan during the first Friday practice session at the Italian Grand Prix. Ma was allowed to drive the car three more times in Friday practice sessions later that year.

Ma began his professional racing career with Asia Racing Team in 2005 Asian Formula Renault Challenge. He finished 16th and had the highest finish of 5th. Ma also raced in the 2005 Italian Formula 3000 championship with Astromega. He also raced in 2006 Formula Renault 2.0 NEC for the same team. He finished 17th in the inaugural A1 Grand Prix season of Team China at China’s Shanghai International Circuit. He raced in European Formula 3 championships, including the 2008 Spanish Formula 3 Championship as well as the 2009 British Formula 3 Championship. The 2010 Superleague Formula was his next race. He won the China Touring Car Championship’s 1600c driver’s title in 2010.
Ma was forced to move to Caterham after HRT crashed at the end 2012 season. He continued his role as Friday test driver while racing for Caterham’s GP2 Series team. He replaced Charles Pic in the 2013 Chinese Grand Prix to take part in the Free Practice 1 session. He was 1.5 seconds slower than his teammate Giedo van den Garde, and he was also about 107% faster than the fastest driver in Free Practice 1. Caterham team announced that Alexander Rossi would replace him for the remainder of the 2013 Chinese Grand Prix. After this replacement, the team’s performance seems to have improved. Alexander Rossi, who made his debut in the GP2 Series race in Bahrain, finished on the podium.
He made his debut GP2 Series race in 2013 Sepang GP2 Series round. Later in the final stint, his lap time dropped to more than 2 minutes in every lap and finished only 21st in featured race, which is the last place in classified drivers. Later he was diagnosed with gastroenteritis leading to extreme dehydration by the medical team on track at Sepang and would not start the sprint race.
