Lynsey Sharp is one of the most popular and richest Middle-Distance Runner who was born on July 11, 1990 in Dumfries, Scotland, United Kingdom. Lynsey Sharp was a Dumfries native and grew up in the nearby Lochmaben. She is the daughter former Scottish athletes Cameron Sharp (nee Lightfoot) and Carol Sharp (nee Sharp). Her father won a European silver medal in the 200m in 1982 and she competed at 1980 Olympic Games. Her mother, Carol Sharp (nee Lightfoot), has an 800m record of 2:02.91. She competed at 1982 Commonwealth Games.

Sharp attended The Mary Erskine School, Edinburgh. Sharp graduated from Edinburgh Napier University with a 2:1 degree in Law (LLB), in 2012, just weeks before she competed in the London Olympics. According to her, she was inspired by her father’s case for medical negligence after he suffered permanent injuries in a car accident. She also loves Rangers, the Scottish Premiership side.

Due to rule changes, athletes with testosterone levels previously exceeding World Athletics limits for female athletes were allowed to compete as females. Sharp finished sixth in the 800 metres final at the 2016 Rio Olympics, improving her own Scottish record to 1:57.69. Following the race, Sharp broke into tears and said that “it was difficult to compete against Caster Semenya and other hyperandrogenic athletes after the rule to suppress testosterone levels was overturned.” Sharp was criticised in the media when she appeared to ignore Semenya post-race while embracing fellow runners Joanna Jóźwik and Melissa Bishop. Sharp has since defended her comments, saying on Twitter that:

Sharp ran 1:58.80 in the 800 metres at the Athletissima Lausanne Diamond League race in July 2017, then later in the month ran a season’s best of 1:58.01 at the Herculis Monaco Diamond League. Three weeks later at the 2017 World Championships in London, she reached the 800 m final, finishing eighth in 1:58.98.

Sharp won the 800m in a surprise win at the UK Championships and Olympic trials in June 2012. Olympic qualifying rules stipulated that three athletes could be sent to an event if they have achieved the A standard or one who has the B standard. Sharp only had the standard of B, but four other British women were eligible for the A standard. Sharp was also able to send Jenny Meadows, an injured Jenny Meadows, and three British athletes that Sharp had defeated at the Olympic trials. Sharp won the silver medal at the European Championships in Helsinki a week later with a personal record of 2:00.52. This time was still not within the A standard. After abnormalities in Elena Arzhakova’s biological passport were discovered, this would be made to gold. Arzhakova lost both her European title 2012 and European U23 title 2011. Sharp was selected by the selectors, leaving behind Meadows and Marilyn Okoro. She ran 2:01.41 in her Olympic heat to qualify for the semi finals. She finished seventh in 2:01.78 and did not reach the final.
