Featherstone served as a Member of London Assembly from 2000 to 2005. She was also Chair of the London Assembly Transport Committee. She was also a member the Metropolitan Police Authority during the five years she served on the London Assembly. Geoff Pope replaced her as MLA.
She made her maiden speech in Parliament on 24 May 2005. She was appointed as a LibDem junior Home Affairs spokesperson by Charles Kennedy in 2005, and to the environment audit select committee.
In 2006, Featherstone was shortlisted in the “Rising Stars” category of the Channel 4 political awards, but did not win. She has also been nominated for the prestigious “Woman of the Year” award.
Featherstone, a councillor representing Muswell Hill Ward in the London Borough Haringey was elected to office in 1998. Julia Glenn and June Andersen, Featherstone were the first Liberal Democrats elected to borough councillors. She was elected Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group and thereby Opposition Leader on the Council from 1998 to 2003.

Featherstone was first to contest the Hornsey/Wood Green seat in 1997’s general election. She finished third, with 25,998 votes less than the winner Barbara Roche. Featherstone defeated Roche in 2005 with a majority vote of 2,395 votes, one of the biggest swings.
A Member of the London Assembly (MLA) from 2000 to 2005, she was Member of Parliament (MP) for Hornsey and Wood Green between 2005 and 2015, before being nominated for a peerage in the Dissolution Peerages List 2015. She was created Baroness Featherstone, of Highgate in the London Borough of Haringey, on 20 October.
