Lea was born in Morecambe (Lancashire), England, United Kingdom. His mother was a hairdresser, and his father loved to travel. Lea grew up in South Africa and Botswana, and moved to Canada at the age of 13 when he was a citizen. After graduating from the University of Western Ontario with a degree in business administration, Lea began his career in the New York department of mergers and acquisitions at Goldman Sachs, where he mainly worked on consumer transactions. After a short stint in the investment-banking section of Schroders, he returned to London in 1992. He was then recruited by Neil Richardson to help start the European affiliate (Glenisla), of Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co. Hicks, Muse and Tate & Furst spotted him in 1998 and invited him to start their European business. He worked for Hicks Muse with a variety of consumer brands, including Typhoo tea and Branston pickle. In 2003, he was responsible for the flotations at Yell Group, the UK’s phone directories company, and Premier Foods 2004.

Lea rose to prominence in 2004 when he separated the European business that he managed from Hicks Muse, his American parent. Lea, Robert Darwent, a Hicks Muse friend, co-founded Lion Capital, which turned Lion Capital into one the most well-known investment firms. Lea and Lion invested in more than 100 consumer brands across North America and Europe. 30 investment professionals currently work for the company. Lea is well-known for his hands-on approach to investing and his ownership stake in high-profile fashion brands like Jimmy Choo, AllSaints, and John Varvatos.
