She co-authored the integrated perspective on depression and prejudice with Patricia Devine, William T. L. Cox and Steven D. Hollon. This perspective combines cognitive theories about depression and cognitive theories about prejudice. Lyn and her coauthors suggest that depression can be caused by prejudice from oneself or another. Prejudice can cause depression at multiple levels, as the researchers call it deprejudice. Prejudice can cause depression at many levels. In the classic example, it causes depression at the societal (e.g. Nazis’ prejudice causing Jews to be depressed), but this causal chain could also happen at the interpersonal (e.g. an abuser’s prejudice causing an abusee to be depressed), or at the intrapersonal (e.g. a man’s prejudice towards himself causing his depression).
Abramson, along with Lauren Alloy (a frequent collaborator), was awarded the James McKeen Cattell Fellow Award for 2008–2009 by the Association for Psychological Science. She is a member of the Institute for Scientific Information’s highly cited researchers.
