Godefroid Niyombare Biography

Godefroid Niyombare is one of the most popular and richest Military Personnel who was born on October 18, 1969 in Bujumbura, Bujumbura Mairie, Burundi. Following the civil war, Niyombare was an army chief under the presidency of President Nkurunziza who appointed Niyombare to be the general of the army. Niyombare was confirmed to that post following a vote by the Senate on April 16, 2009. The first Hutu to be appointed as the head of the army.

Godefroid Niyombare (born 1969) is a Burundian military officer who was the leader of an attempted coup against Burundi’s President Pierre Nkurunziza on 13 May 2015. When the coup, Niyombare was a Major General. He had previously served as the chief of staff to the military and as Burundi’s Ambassador in Kenya and was in charge of the National Intelligence Service (Service national de renseignement, SNR) from December 2014 when he was replaced by Adolphe Nshimirimana. He remained in the post until February 2015 after which he was fired by Nkurunziza, and was later replaced by Major General Moise Pasteur Bucumi.

In the amid protests against Nkurunziza’s campaign to run for a third term that many considered to be constitutionally unconstitutional, Niyombare announced from a private radio station on May 13 2015 that he had decided to remove the President who was engaged in talks with his neighbor Tanzania. Alongside other high-ranking officials Niyombare blamed Nkurunziza for creating the problem in pursuing his controversial presidential run. In the streets, protesters who were against Nkurunziza welcomed the news, and, despite government denials early reports indicated that the coup was successful. Nkurunziza immediately tried to return to his home country however, he was in a position to not return because of the rebels’ control over Bujumbura Airport.
