She is also a feminist activist. Colby College, Waterville, Maine, is where she is Professor of Education and Director for Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. Her research interests include youth activism, girl development, and sexualization of girls by marketers and the media. She co-founded the Hardy Girls Healthy Women research group and the SPARK activist movement to stop the sexualization of young girls aged 13-22 in the media. She is the author of five books, as well as many peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. In 2013, she was inducted into Maine Women’s Hall of Fame.

Brown is a member the National Women’s Studies Association and the National Association for Media Literacy Education. Brown is also a member on the board of Hardy Girls Healthy Women, and the executive committee for the Waterville Inclusive Community Project. She is involved in the trauma-informed rural education redesign research/practice partnership known Transforming Rural Experience in Education. Waterville High School Gay, Straight, and Trans Alliance is her co-facilitator. She was a member the American Psychological Association Presidential Task Force for Adolescent Girls in 1994 and a consultant to Ms. Foundation for Women’s National Girls’ In 1994. She has been a consultant on numerous film and media projects.

In 2006 she was a co-winner, with Lauren Sterling, of the Groundbreaking Activist Leader Award from the Maine International Film Festival, for co- producing a documentary on the play Ugly Ducklings, which addresses homophobia and youth suicide. She was named College Professor of the Year by the Academy of Education Arts and Sciences International in 2014. She was inducted into the Maine Women’s Hall of Fame in 2013.

Brown and her partner, Mark Tappan, also a professor of education at Colby College, have one daughter and reside in Waterville. In 2012 their then- seventeen-year-old daughter Maya, a blogger for SPARK, was one of three girls interviewed by Katie Couric on the Katie show about their objections to the way the media portrays teen girls.

Brown and Carol Gilligan co-authored the first book Meeting at the Crossroads. This focused on the unstudied phase of female development known as the transition from childhood to adulthood. It also introduced the Listener’s Guide as a research tool. It was one of the New York Times Notable Books of the year. Brown interviewed over 400 girls in grades 1-12 to test the hypothesis that gossiping and backstabbing are a result of society’s expectations of a perfect woman. Sharon Lamb and Brown co-authored two books about the sexualization and marketing of teenagers: Packaging Girlhood: Restoring our daughters from marketers’ schemes (2006) and Packaging Boyhood. Saving our sons form superheroes and slackers and other media stereotypes (2009). Mark Tappan was her co-author of the latter book.
