Luther John Elliss, born March 22, 1973, is an American former college and professional football player. He was a defensive lineman in the National Football League (NFL), for ten years. He was an All-American college football player for the University of Utah. Elliss was drafted in the first round, 1995 NFL Draft. He played professional football for the Detroit Lions (NFL) and Denver Broncos (NFL). He was a Pro Bowler twice.

Elliss and Rebecca have 12 children, seven of which are adopted. Christian Elliss’ two sons, Kaden and Kaden, are both Idaho football players. His son Kaden Elliss was drafted in 2019 by the New Orleans Saints.

He played in 134 regular-season games and started 119. He also compiled 331 tackles and 29.0 sacks. In 1999 and 2000, he was a Pro Bowl selection.

Elliss was awarded an athletic scholarship to the University of Utah and played as a defensive player for the Utah Utes football teams from 1991 to 1994. Because Ron McBride, the head football coach, suggested that Elliss could play basketball under Rick Majerus, he chose Utah. He decided to continue playing football full-time after one season. He was a first-team All- Western Athletic Conference selection (WAC), in 1992, 1993, and 1994. He was a senior in 1994 and was recognized as a consensus First-Team All American. In addition, he was named the WAC Defensive Play of the Year.

Elliss was selected by the Detroit Lions in the 20th round of the 1995 NFL Draft. He played for the Lions between 1995 and 2003. He was nicknamed “Pass Rushing Luther” during his time with Detroit. He had 324 tackles and 27.0 quarterback passes sacks while with the Lions. After appearing in five games in 2003, the Lions released him. In 2004, he played in his final season for the Denver Broncos, appearing in eight games and recording two sacks.

On February 27, 2017, Elliss was announced as the new defensive line coach for the Idaho Vandals football team under head coach Paul Petrino. Prior to joining the Vandals, he spent two seasons as the team chaplain for the Denver Broncos of the NFL.
