Bell was awarded a Blues Music Award in 2014 for “Blues in my Soul”, which was in the ‘Song of the year’ category. In four other categories, he was also nominated.

Bell’s 2016 album, Can’t Shake This Feeling, was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album.

Bell appears on Gettin’ up – Live At Buddy Guy’s Legends Rosa’s And Lurrie’s Homes, a 2007 CD/DVD release from Delmark where he plays alongside his father Carey. Carey passed away shortly after the release of this CD and DVD, making this his final recorded work.

He joined Koko Taylor’s Blues Machine in the middle of the 1970s and toured for four years with the group. In 1977, he made his recording debut on the album Heartaches and Pain by his father and on Eddie C. Campbell’s King of the Jungle. He formed The Sons of Blues in that year with Billy Branch, a harmonica player. The Alligator Records compilation Living Chicago Blues Vol. featured three tracks from the band’s recordings. 3 was released in 1978. His first solo album, Everybody Wants To Win, was released on JSP Records in 1989.

In 1995, he made a comeback with the well-received Mercurial Son album. This was his first Delmark record. He released a series of albums and began to play more often in Chicago’s blues and club festivals.

In 2015, Bell won a Blues Music Award in the ‘Traditional Blues Male Artist’ category.
