Sassano was a part of three matches in 2010, before undergoing season-ending ankle reconstruction surgery. Sassano, who was originally selected by Los Angeles Galaxy for Stage 2 of Re-Entry draft on December 15, 2010, was traded to Sporting Kansas City. On January 12, 2011, he signed with Sporting KC. He scored his first Major League Soccer goal against FC Dallas on June 12, 2011. Sassano underwent season-ending knee surgery in September 2011. On January 30, 2012, he signed a new contract with SKC. Sassano began 2012 promisingly, but he was forced to withdraw after undergoing his third major surgery in two years.

On March 14, 2018, Sassano was named the technical director of FC Cincinnati during their final season in the United Soccer League. He was heavily involved with the planning and roster selection for FC Cincinnati as they moved up to Major League Soccer.

Sassano was primarily a defensive midfielder during his second season. After the 2009 Major League Soccer season, Sassano spent three weeks training with FC Red Bull Salzburg.

Sassano started his soccer career at Lamorinda Soccer Club. He was a graduate of Miramonte High in Orinda, California. He also played college soccer at University of California, Berkeley. He was an All-Pac-10 honorable mention in 2005, and a Pac-10 All-Academic honorable mention in 2007. Sassano played in 64 games, scoring four goals and recording 19 assists over his four-year Golden Bears career. Sassano played college football for the San Francisco Seals, and San Jose Frogs in the USL Premier Development League.

Sassano, who was drafted by the 32nd pick in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft by New York Red Bulls, made his debut against Columbus Crew on 5 April 2008. Sassano was a valuable player in the 2008 squad because of his versatility, which allowed him to play a lot in his rookie campaign. After Seth Stammler was injured, Sassano was able to be inserted in the starting line-up for the club’s first round MLS Playoff series.
