Romano was in good form during Super Rugby 2016, which allowed him to play against Wales in the first test. Scott Barrett made his debut for New Zealand, but he missed the end-of-year fixtures. Scott Barrett was originally in the squad to cover Sam Whitelock and Romano for injury. Romano was injured in 2017 when he returned to rugby. He lost his starting position in the Crusaders to Barrett. Romano was injured to Barrett and lost his starting spot in the Crusaders against the Irish Lions touring team. However, Romano did start. After Barrett returned from injury, Romano was back to his regular position on the bench and was used in the three knockout rounds of 2017 Super Rugby season. This included the final against the Lions that saw Romano play the role of a replacement.

Romano was not selected for the All Blacks’ 33-man squad to play in a three- test series against France in 2018.

Romano was unable to play international rugby in the Autumn Internationals 2016 because of the death of a family member. Romano is a qualified builder, and his grandfather is Italian.
