Puskedra returned home with his wife to the United States where he briefly trained for the New York City Marathon. He ran 2:28.54 in his marathon debut. However, his half-marathon personal record was widely criticized. He was discouraged by his New York City experience and decided to train for the 2015 Grandma’s Marathon. There, he ran a much faster result of 2:15;27.

After 2016 US Olympic Marathon Trials, Puskedra switched from Nike to ASICS following Team Hall’s apparels unification. But he later reverted to Nike, due to connect with Evan Jager and Sam Crouser.

Puskedra graduated in 2008 from Judge Memorial Catholic High School, Salt Lake City, Utah. In high school, Puskedra was a eight-time state champion. He won the Utah state track championships in 1600 meters and 3200 metres as a sophomore and junior respectively. As a senior, he also won the state cross country championships. His senior year, he set all-classifications records in track at 3200m (8:54.40), 1,600m (4:09.40), and cross country (1:54.60). He also became the first high school runner in Utah to run over 9:00 in the 3200m. He won the Nike Cross Southwest Regional title in 2007 and broke the meet record by running the race in 14 minutes 48. He finished fifth at the Foot Locker National Cross Country Championships 2007. At the 2008 Reebok Boston Indoor Games, he ran the fastest high-school indoor mile time (4:08.77). Puskedra won the Nike Indoor Nationals in 8:49.58, the sixth- fastest high school indoor 2 mile time in American history. As a senior, he was second in the Nike Outdoor National meet’s two-mile (4:06.60) as well as the mile (8:47.06). In 8:46.41, he was tenth in two-mile at the 2008 Prefontaine Classic. He was a junior and finished fourth in the Penn Relays high-school boys mile in 4 minutes 25.11. Puskedra was the recipient of three Utah Boys Gatorade Athlete Of The Year awards (2006-07, 2007-08 in track, and 2007-08 cross country). He was named the 2007-08 Salt Lake Tribune Athlete of Year in all sports and an All-American by USA Today at one and two mile.

He attended Judge Memorial Catholic High School and then studied business administration at the University of Oregon. He was a member of the Oregon Ducks cross-country and track teams. He earned 12 NCAA Division I All-American Awards and was a finalist in 10,000 meters at the NCAA level for four consecutive years from 2009 to 2012.

However, at the end of 2014, his contract with Nike expired, and Puskedra did not anticipate continuing a professional career in running. He moved with his wife to South Africa and gained 23 pounds from his race weight in the course of a month.
