Lucas Joseph Fickell, born August 18, 1973, is an American football coach. He is currently the University of Cincinnati’s head coach. He was a Ohio State University player for many years before becoming an assistant coach. He was OSU’s interim head coach for the entire 2011 season.
He spent two seasons with the Zips before returning to Ohio State as the special team coordinator in 2002 under Jim Tressel, the second-year head coach. Fickell was named the linebackers coach in 2004, and also became the co-defensive coordinator. He was awarded the AFCA Assistant Coach of The Year in 2010. This is his second recognition by the association, which also recognizes Woody Hayes and Earle Bruce as Buckeyes coaches.
After Ohio State posted a 6–6 regular season record, Fickell was passed up for the permanent head job, and instead Ohio State hired Urban Meyer. Fickell guided the Buckeyes one last time in the 2012 Gator Bowl against Meyer’s old team, the Florida Gators. After Meyer took the helm, Fickell returned to his old job as co-defensive coordinator, a job in which he served until he was named head coach at Cincinnati.
On December 10, 2016, Fickell was named as the 39th head coach of the University of Cincinnati, taking the place of the resigning Tommy Tuberville. In his first season, Fickell led the Bearcats to a 4-8 record.

Fickell began his playing career at DeSales High School. He was a two-time All-Ohio first team defensive tackle and a three-time state wrestling champion. Fickell, who redshirted for the Buckeyes 1992, was a standout defensive play, making a school record 50 consecutive starts at the position of nose guard from 1993 to 1996. He was a freshman and lined up alongside Dan Wilkinson. Fickell, despite a torn pectoral muscles, started the 1997 Rose Bowl. He made two tackles in the Buckeyes win over Arizona State. Fickell, who graduated from Ohio State in 1997 was signed as an undrafted-free agent with the New Orleans Saints (NFL). He tore the ACL in his left knee and spent the rest of the season on injured reserve. The team later released him.
After a brief stint as a graduate assistant at Ohio State in 1999, Fickell was hired as the University of Akron’s defensive line coach in 2000.
In 2011, Fickell was originally named to serve as interim head coach in place of Jim Tressel, who was given a five-game suspension by the NCAA due to a recruiting scandal. However, in May of that year, Tressell resigned and Fickell was given a one-year contract to serve as interim coach, only for the 2011 season.
