Farrell attended Saint Ignatius High School, Cleveland, Ohio and Northwestern University. He played college baseball with the Northwestern Wildcats. He was diagnosed with schwannoma in 2010, his first year. This is a benign tumor that affects the nerve sheath of his jaw. It required surgery to remove. In 2011, Farrell was diagnosed with another tumor, which was surgically removed. He received radiation therapy to treat it. Farrell was awarded the Big Ten Medal of Honor in his senior year at Northwestern. He had 208 strikeouts during his four years of Northwestern. Farrell played collegiate baseball in summer 2011 with the Wareham Gatemen, Cape Cod Baseball League. He returned to the league in 2012 and played for the Falmouth Commodores.
Farrell was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the sixth round. Farrell was a Rookie Advanced level pitcher in Idaho Falls. He went 1-3 with a 6.65 ERA. However, he did strikeout 45 batters over 43/3 innings. Farrell struggled in 2014 at Single-A Lexington. He went 2-12 in 19 appearances with a 5.25 ERA and struck out 8.5 batters every 9 innings. Farrell started the 2015 season at High-A Wilmington and was then promoted to Double-A Northwest Arkansas. Farrell was 5-3 in Double-A with a 3.09 ERA. However, his K/9 fell to 6.3. Farrell pitched in 2016 for Triple-A Omaha. He made 19 appearances, 14 starts and was 6-3 with a 3.76 ERA. Farrell returned to Omaha for the 2017 season. He made 13 starts and was promoted to the major leagues in July 1.
On August 9, 2017, Farrell was claimed off waivers by the Cincinnati Reds, and assigned to the Triple-A Louisville Bats. He was called up by the Reds on August 23, when he made his National League debut and pitched 3 innings of scoreless relief.
