The 2000 Royal Philharmonic Society Composition Prize was awarded to composers aged under 29 years. Also, the 2004 BBC Radio 3 Listeners Award at the British Composer Awards was given. Since 1993, David Sawer was the first recipient of a Paul Hamlyn Artists’ Award for composition. He was also nominated for the Royal Philharmonic Society large scale composition prize for his song cycle On Voit Tout En Aventure. Bedford was awarded the British Composer Award 2008 for Wreathe, his orchestral work from 2007. He was also awarded the Ernst von Siemens Composers Prize in 2012.
He was a student of composition at the Royal College of Music with Edwin Roxburgh, Simon Bainbridge and received the Mendelssohn Scholarship for 2000. The Royal Academy of Music then offered post-graduate studies with Simon Bainbridge. In 2007, Bedford signed to Universal Edition London.
Bedford has written two operas, Seven Angels with librettist Glyn Maxwell, and Through His Teeth with David Harrower. Both have received multiple performances both in the UK and Germany. In 2018 Bastille Musique released a studio recording of Through His Teeth, performed by Opera Factory Freiburg.
