The two British expatriates, who were British citizens, set sail from England in 1947 to find a paradise that would allow them to raise a family. They established a trading company on Pigeon Island, Solomons. Irvine accepted the invitation, and she traveled to the Solomon Islands in 1998 to experience island life again. Her two youngest children were with her, and she returned to Faraway after one year.
After the success of Castaway, she published Runaway in 1985 about her life before she decided to spend one year at Tuin. She describes how she was hitchhiking in Greece when she was raped with a knife-point and suffered a mental breakdown.
Irvine purchased Rumachroy in Scotland in 1984. She was a single mother who raised her children there. She moved to south-eastern Bulgaria in 2007.
