After the Virginia Tech shootings in April 2007, it was discovered that Roy had noticed violent tendencies two years prior to Seung-Hui Cho writings and behavior. Although she warned campus authorities about Cho at the time, they were unable to take any action or force Cho into psychiatric care because Cho had not made any threats.
She has published poetry, fiction and commentaries in many publications including North American Review and American Poetry Review, Rattle and Prairie Schooner, The New York Times and Chronicle of Higher Education. Inside Higher Education and USA Today also featured her work in anthologies such as Mixed: Anthology of Short Fiction about the Multiracial Experience (ed. Chandra Prasad (2006), Go Girl: A Book of Travel and Adventure for Black Women (ed. Elaine Lee (1997), and Daughters of Africa – An International Anthology of Words & Writings by Women of African Descent. Margaret Busby, 1992).
