She moved to New York in 2006 with Richard Barnes, her husband, and their two children. She is the Henry Wolf Professor and Associate Dean of the School of Art, Media and Technology (AMT) at the Parsons School of Design.
Tenazas was awarded the AIGA Medal in 2013 for “her prominent role in translating postmodern ideas into critical design practice; her exploration of the relationship between type, photography and language; and the development and leadership of highly-respected design education programs—always with exquisite execution.”
Tenazas founded Tenazas Design in 1985 after she was offered a faculty position at California College of Arts and Crafts. She founded the CCA graphic design MFA program in 2000. She believed that the new graduate program should encourage students to explore their ideas and help them make informed decisions. This self-discovery process is evident in the program’s interdisciplinarity focus, which brings together theory as well as practice to help each individual find their own voice in design.

Lucille Tenazas, born December 17, 1953, is an American graphic designer. Tenazas Design is her foundation and chief executive officer.
Her aunt offered to cover postgraduate tuition in America in the mid-1970s. She was unable to find a school closer to her aunt and she had no idea of the country’s geography. So, she enrolled at California College of Arts and Crafts (now CCA) and moved to San Francisco in 1978. She visited her aunt in Michigan in December 1979 and stopped by Cranbrook Academy of Art in order to show Katherine McCoy the portfolio. McCoy accepted Tenazas to Cranbrook as a midyear transfer student. She also received an MFA in 2-D design.
In 2002, Tenazas was awarded the National Design Award in Communications Design by the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum.
