He was appointed assistant coach at Montepaschi Siena in 2006 by Simone Pianigiani. He was an assistant coach at Montepaschi and won six Italian League championships consecutively (2007-2012), five Italian Super Cups (2006), and four Italian Cups (2012). After Simone Pianigiani’s departure to Fenerbahce, he assumed the role as head coach at Montepaschi Siena in June 2012. He won the Italian Cup on February 10, 2013 after beating Pallacanestro Varese by a score 77-74. He also won his first Italian League championship as a head coach on June 19, 2013.
On 1 July, 2018, Banchi was appointed as the head coach of AEK Athens of the Greek Basket League (GBL) and FIBA Champions League (BCL). In June 17, 2019 his contracted at AEK Athens was terminated.
In 2018, Banchi became the head coach of the German club Brose Bamberg, of the German top-tier level Basketball Bundesliga (BBL), and the EuroLeague.
He signed a two year deal on July 1, 2013 to become the head coach for the EuroLeague club Emporio Armani Milano, which is the European-wide top-tier EuroLeague club. He won the Italian League championship in his first season, repeating Carlo Recalcati’s success as one of the few head coaches to win consecutive Italian League titles with different teams.

Banchi started his career as a basketball coach with Basketball Grosseto’s youth teams. He then became an assistant coach for Affrico Fienze and Armed Forces Vigna di Valle. He coached the Livorno junior basketball teams, winning three consecutive youth national championships between 1995-1997.
The Italian second-tier Serie A2 level Basket Livorno promoted him to the position of head coach. He made his debut in 1999 on Pall Trieste’s bench. After two years, he returned to Livorno to coach. Livorno had been promoted to the Italian top-tier LBA. He continued that with two stops in Italy’s 2nd Division in Trapani, and Aurora Basket Jesi.
In the 2017–18 season, he was the head coach of the European-wide second-tier level EuroCup team, Auxulium Torino.
