Luc Soete is one of the most popular and richest Economist who was born on September 15, 1950 in Brussels, Belgium. Luc Soete, born Sint- Jans-Molenbeek, 15 September 1950 is a Belgian economist. He was previously Rector Magnificus and Professor of International Economic Relations at Maastricht University. He also served as director of UNU-MERIT which is a joint research institution of Maastricht University and the United Nations University. Since 2010, Luc Soete has been a member of both the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and (AWTI), the Dutch scientific advisory body.
He was named dean of Maastricht Graduate School of Governance in 2010. Soete was appointed Rector Magnificus at Maastricht University in September 2012. Soete was also acting vice-director of DSTI (Directorate for Science, Technology and Industry) of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. He is part-time dean of Maastricht School of Management (MSM), and a member of several High Level Expert Groups of European Commission.
Luc Soete was awarded the MSM Honorary Fellow Award 2002, the Belgian Commander of the Order of the Crown 2006 and an honorary doctorate by Ghent University 2010.

Luc Soete studied economic sciences at Ghent University. He then started his career at the University of Antwerp’s Economy Department as a researcher. He received his PhD in Economics from the University of Sussex in 1978. His mentor Christopher Freeman has been his mentor and he has co-authored many publications.
He was employed by the Institute of Development Studies (now the University of Sussex) and the Science Policy Research Unit, (SPRU), as well as the Economy Department at Stanford University. He was appointed professor at the Rijksuniversiteit Limburg, now Maastricht University, in Maastricht (the Netherlands), where he established the Maastricht Economic Research Institute on Innovation and Technology in 1988. In 2006, MERIT was merged with UNU Institute for New Technologies(UNU-INTECH), which was founded in 1990.
