Since Pope Benedict XVI’s nomination at 7 October 2009, he was the bishop for the Diocese of French Armed Forces until 2017. At the Cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris, he was consecrated on 29 November 2009. Pope Francis appointed him Archbishop of Strasbourg on 18 February 2017.
Ravel caused controversy by calling abortion “weapons of mass destruction”. He called for the return to the French abortion debate at the Armed Forces monthly journal in February 2015. As a way to distance themselves from the content, the French Defence Minister requested that the magazine stop featuring the Army’s logo on the cover.
Pope Benedict XVI nominated him bishop of the Diocese for the French Armed Forces on 7 October 2009. At the Cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris, he was consecrated by cardinal Andre Vingt-Trois on 29 November 2009. In 2011, he was elected to the Doctrinal Committee of the Bishops Conference of France.
