Hamilton was a dominating high school basketball player at Chicago’s Providence St. Mel. He led the Knights to four consecutive IHSA boys’ sectional championships (1982-1985), three consecutive Elite-Eight appearances from 1983-1985, and appearances in both the 1984 “Final-Four”, as well as the 1985 state championship. Hamilton was a varsity basketball player who scored 165 points in 11 IHSA tournament semifinals games. He averaged 15.0 points per match and was named to all-tournament center in ’83 and ’84. Hamilton’s teams won 116 games and lost only 14 games while playing for St. Mel. This gives them an 89.2 win percentage. Hamilton’s teams would progress further in the state tournament each season at St. Mel. Under the guidance of Tom Shields, Hamilton would lose his first year with Hamilton’s team in the IHSA Super- sectional to Scott Meents (future Fighting Illini basketball player) and the Herscher Tigers. Hamilton’s sophomore year saw Hamilton’s team win the super- sectional, but lose in quarterfinals against Marty Simmons, future Indiana Hoosiers basketball player, and the Lawrenceville Indians, the current state champion. Hamilton’s junior season would see the Knights dominate Illinois high school basketball. They would finish the regular season with 22 victories and 3 losses. Hamilton’s team had 29 wins, but a very hot Mt. Pulaski High School defeated the Knights to advance to the championship, leaving them with a game against Lena-Winslow High School for their third place game. They would win their 30th victory.
Hamilton played for the University of Illinois from 1985 to 1989 for four more years. Hamilton was part of the 1989 NCAA men’s basketball tournament Final Four Flyin’ Illini team. Hamilton had 1,241 career points and 87 blocked shots. He also had a.534 percentage in field goals for the Fighting Illini.
In 2007, the Illinois High School Association named Hamilton one of the 100 Legends of the IHSA Boys Basketball Tournament.
