She switched to the Dutch parliament in 2003. She was the spokesperson for her party’s foreign policy, higher education and justice as well as technology, European affairs, gay rights, and European affairs. She was vice-chairwoman and chairwoman of parliamentary party, the parliamentary committee for technology policy and vice president of the European affairs committee. Dennis Hesseling was her husband and she had a son named “Helix” in 2004. Van der Laan is fluent in Dutch and English and raising her son bilingually.
Lousewies van der Laan lost out to Alexander Pechtold in the June 2006 D66 leadership election.
She assumed the parliamentary leadership of D66 in the House of Representatives on 3 February 2006, succeeding Boris Dittrich. Dittrich stepped down after the debate on sending Dutch troops to the Afghan province of Uruzgan.
She was elected head of D66 for the European elections in 1999. She was elected chairwoman of the parliamentary parties and a member of the ELDR’s parliamentary party board. She was involved in a variety of issues, including budget, international relations, civil liberties, and environmental affairs. She was vice-chairwoman, 1999-2002, of the Committee on Budget Control, and vice-chairwoman, 2002-2003, of the Committee on Liberties and Civil Rights, Justice and Home Affairs. Between 1999 and 2003 she was a member of the Committee on the Rights of the Woman and Equal Chances, the delegation responsible for relations with the Palestinian Authority from 1999 to 2002. She was a substitute member of the Committee on Environment Protection, Public Health, and Consumers’ Policies and the substitute for the delegation to Slovakia between 1999 and 2002. She was the Budget Committee’s substitute between 2002 and 2003. She was the founder of the Intergroup on Food Safety and the Campaign for Parliamentary Reform.

She graduated from high school at the German Schools in Washington, DC. She was awarded the International Baccalaureate from Armand Hammer United World College of the American West in Montezuma (New Mexico). Van der Laan graduated in 1984 and moved to the Netherlands to pursue law studies at the University of Leiden. She graduated in 1990 with a specialization in European and International Law. She studied international relations at Johns Hopkins University in Bologna’s Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies between 1990 and 1991. She worked between 1991 and 1994 for TACIS, the European Commission. There she was responsible for environmental project management. She was an environmental specialist at the EBRD London in 1995. She worked between 1995 and 1997 for Hans van den Broek, the Cabinet of Dutch European Commissar for External Relations. She became Hans van den Broek’s spokesperson in 1997.
Van der Laan played a significant role in the downfall of the Second Balkenende cabinet by supporting a motion of no confidence against Minister Rita Verdonk regarding Verdonk’s behavior in the matter of Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s citizenship. On 4 August 2006, she announced that she would retire from the House of Representatives after the 2006 elections. She describes herself as an agnostic.
