Graham Basanti a.k.a. M. G. Basanti is a Silver Jubilee Woman priest, and the first Ordinand of the evangelical Jeypore Evangelical Lutheran Church Society (JELC) which is headquartered at Jeypore, Odisha. She was at the frontline in JELC leadership, and represented its interests on the United Evangelical Lutheran Churches in India in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Basanti is an early member of the Association of Theologically Trained Women of India (ATTWI), and was appointed to the executive Committee for the biennium 1981-2001 and 2002-2006. Basanti has also been affiliated with the National Council of Churches in India.
Women’s ordination in India was not easy. Male chauvinism, in combination with a variety of reasons prevented them from being orally ordained. Despite this, Elizabeth Paul, CSI Order of Sisters was able to be ordained in the year 1976. The ordinations that were notable included the ordination from Eggoni Pushpalalitha CSI (1984) and Marathakavalli David CSI (1989), Rajula Annie Watson, CSI (1991), Mutyala Sarah Grace Lalitha Kumari CBCNC (1992), Bathineni Venkata Subbamma, AELC (1999), Evangeline Anderson-Rajkumar, ALC (2006) and many more in the line. In the same way, Navamani-Elia P. MCI served as the head of The Bible Society of India as the President of the Bible Society of India.

After completing her spiritual development during 1974 Basanti took on the role of Matron at the all-girls’ JELC-Boarding facility in Kotpad. The boarding school was development-focused that provided care to girls from inner regions. Basanti continued to be a part of the program for 18 years, until her appointment in 1992. Basanti was later transferred to pastoral duties to Nowrangpur until her retirement in 2009.
Jensen Theological College, Kotpad was an affiliated seminary of the Senate of Serampore College (University) which was India’s first University was established in 1956 by the Baptist Missions led by Joshua Marshman, William Carey, and William Ward. In the University ceremony held on the 1st of February 1975 located at Serampore College, Serampore, West Bengal, the University identified names of Basanti among those who graduated who were eligible to earn the title that confers the title of Licentiate in Theology (L. Th.). The Registrars at the time were Chetti Devasahayam CBCNC along with J. T. Krogh, NELC. On the day of convocation on the day of the convocation, the Commemoration service was conducted by Old Testament Scholar, G. Babu Rao, CBCNC who was then Faculty Member at Serampore College located at the CNI-St. Olave’s church, Serampore.
