Ruth, seven years old, was brought to France by her parents who fled Nazi Germany. Her extended family perished in the Holocaust. Ruth was a teacher in Melbourne and Jacques was a researcher at the University of Melbourne’s history department.
2008, she was elected a Member of Australia’s Order of Australia for her services to literature.
Adler received a Bachelor of Arts degree from University of Reading and a Master of Arts, as well as a Master of Philosophy degree from Columbia University. She studied under Edward Said. She was the editor of Australian Book Review from 1988 to 1989. She was also the Publisher of Reed Books, Arts and Entertainment Editor of The Age, Deputy Director of Academic & Research at the Victorian College of the Arts, and CEO and Publisher of Melbourne University Publishing.
