Louis Manzo, a politician of the American Democratic Party, was born February 28, 1955 in Jersey City. He represented the 31st congressional district in the New Jersey General Assembly. He unsuccessfully ran for the office of Mayor of Jersey City.
Manzo was among 44 people who were arrested in Operation Bid Rig. This joint operation of the FBI and IRS into money laundering and corruption, took place on July 23, 2009. Manzo was accused of taking $27,500 in corrupt cash payments to use in his failed Jersey City mayoral election campaign. Manzo was initially charged under the federal Hobbs Act with two counts each of extortion. However, Jose L. Linares, a U.S. District Court Judge, dismissed the charges and ruled that the act is only applicable to elected officials. Manzo was then charged with two counts of violating The Travel Act. He was accused of crossing state lines in order to commit a crime and failing to report to authorities about others collecting bribes. Linares dismissed all remaining charges against Manzo on February 17, 2012.
Manzo declared in December 2008 that he would run a campaign against incumbent Mayor Jerramiah Shealy for the office of mayor of Jersey City. Manzo finished second in a field that included five candidates but was unable force Healy to go to a runoff. Manzo received 26% of the vote compared to Healy’s 53%.
