Lori Gruen Biography

Lori Gruen is one of the most popular and richest Philosopher who was born on October 30, 1962 in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Gruen received a BA degree in philosophy in 1983 from the University of Colorado Boulder. She then spent a year at Arizona as a graduate student. After that, she worked in the animal liberation movement. She published her first book in 1987, Animal Liberation: a Graphic Guide. It was written by Peter Singer and illustrated with David Hine. In 1989, she returned to Colorado Boulder for her PhD.

Hypatia published an article in April 2017 that was peer-reviewed and compared transgender identities to transracial ones. New York magazine reported Gruen as a signatory to an open letter calling for the article’s retraction. Hypatia’s editor in chief stood by publication of the article.

Gruen, who specializes in animal ethics is the author of many books including Ethics and Animals, An Introduction (2011) and Entangled Empathy, An Alternative Ethic to Our Relationships With Animals (2015). She is the creator of first100chimps.wesleyan.edu, a memorial for the first 100 chimpanzees used in research in the United States.
