De Petris started her political career in 1980s, joining Proletarian Democracy. She has been active in anti-nuclear, environmentalist movements, including organizing the referendum against hunting, nuclear power and pesticides in agriculture. She was a candidate for Chamber of Deputies in 1987 and received 4417 preferences. However, she wasn’t elected. She was one of the founding members of the Federation of the Greens Lists in 1989 and became a Rome city councilor. She was elected Councilor for Environmental Policies in 1995 by Mayor Francesco Rutelli. This included the addition of the delegations for agricultural policies, the Centopiazze Office, and the Office for the Prevention of Atmospheric Pollution and Civil Protection.
De Petris was elected senator in 2001 as part of the center-left Ulivo coalition. She was a member of the parliamentary group “The Greens-The Olive Tree”. She was a member of both the Senate for Finance and Agriculture permanent commissions from 2001 to 2006. She was elected to the position of Councilor for Environment in the Province of Rome in 2005.
In the political elections of 2018 she was re-elected Senator with the left- wing coalition of Free and Equal and is confirmed president of the Mixed Group.
