Lo Ta-yu is one of the most popular and richest Singer-Songwriter who was born on July 20, 1954 in Taipei, Taiwan. Lo is a stylistically ambiguous, but his contributions to Taiwan’s folk song genre were most notable. His early music is rooted in folk traditions, and many songs reflect native Taiwanese cultural influences. Some songs recall 1950s American soda shop and diner rock while others have a 1970s lounge-lizard growl. His lyrics were what captured the attention of a large generation. They touched on topics such as life, attitudes and social responsibility. He also addressed the political issues in Taiwan and China Mainland with a subtle, critical tone of dark humor. The lyrics are not complex or artistic, but more conversational. The cleverness lies in the meaning and not the way the words are arranged.
In 1983, he released Master of the Future (Wei Lai De Zhu Ren Weng ). It features several songs including the title song that warns of a future run entirely by children. “72 Transformations” is Xian Xiang Shi Er Bian. “Orphan of the Asia” (Ya Xi Ya De Gu Er ), shares its title with Wu Zhuoliu’s novel about the Japanese occupation of Taiwan.
Lover/Comrade (愛人同志) was Lo’s next album, released in 1988. In addition to the title song which uses political slogans in the context of a love song, the album also included “Love Song 1990” (戀曲1990), one of his most famous love songs that was written 6 years after he had written “Love Song 1980.”
In 1991, he wrote “Pearl of the Orient” (東方之珠), regarded as one of his most famous songs which sings praises to Hong Kong as a symbolic haven from the perils of the Pacific and implores Hong Kong not to lose its Chinese identity in the face of rapid modernization and British colonization at that time. He also wrote “Queen’s Road East” (皇后大道東), a Cantonese song he sang with Ram Chiang that satirizes the impending Hong Kong handover in 1997.
Lo’s debut album Zhi Hu Zhe Ye (Zhi Hu Zhe Ye) was released in 1982. The title is solely composed of Classical Chinese grammatical particles. It was a ground-breaking album that expanded the horizons and established a new model in Chinese songwriting. His debut album was a buzz-worthy success. He sang songs with brazen commentary about Taiwan’s social scene and wore sunglasses.
