Austin was recalled to the 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, in 1993. He commanded the 2nd Battalion and 505th Parachute Infantry regiment. Later, he was the G-3 of the 82nd Airborne Division. After graduating from the U.S. Army War College, Carlisle Barracks in Pennsylvania, he commanded 3rd Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He was soon assigned to the Pentagon, Washington, D.C., as the Chief, Joint Operations Division, J-3 on the Joint Staff. His next assignment was that of Assistant Division Commander for Maneuver (3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized), Fort Stewart in Georgia). He was the ADC-M and helped to lead the invasion of Iraq by the division in March 2003.

On December 8, 2006, Austin was promoted to lieutenant general, and assumed command of the XVIII Airborne Corps, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Austin handed over command of XVIII Corps to become Director of the Joint Staff in August 2009.

In February 2008, Austin became the second highest ranking commander in Iraq, taking command of the Multi-National Corps – Iraq (MNC-I). As commander of MNC-I, he directed the operations of approximately 152,000 joint and coalition forces in all sectors of Iraq.

After graduating from West Point, Austin was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. After graduating from West Point, Austin was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division,Mechanized in Germany. He served as a Scout Platoon Leader and a Rifle Leader in A Company 1st Battalion 7th Infantry. After completing the Infantry Officer Advanced Course and completing this assignment, he was assigned the 82nd Airborne Division in Fort Bragg (North Carolina). He commanded Combat Support Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Infantry, 508th Infantry, and served as Assistant S-3 (Operations), for 1st Brigade of the 82nd Airborne Division.

Lloyd James Austin III, born August 8, 1953, is a former Four-Star General in the United States Army. He was the 12th Commander of United States Central Command. Austin was the first black commander of the organization. Austin was the 33rd Vice-Chairman of the United States Army, serving from January 31, 2012 to March 8, 2013, before he was assigned to CENTCOM. Prior to CENTCOM, Austin was the 33rd Vice Chief of Staff of United States Army from January 31, 2012 to March 8, 2013. The Pentagon announced on December 6, 2012 that President Barack Obama had appointed Austin to head the U.S. Central Command. On March 5, 2013, the U.S. Senate confirmed Austin and he assumed command on March 22, 2013. Austin retired from the military on April 5, 2016. He was awarded the Defense Distinguished Service Medal and the Army Distinguished Service Medal. The Defense Superior Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, and the Legion of Merit were also presented to him.

Austin was sent to Indianapolis, Indiana in 1981 as the Operations Officer of the U.S. Army Indianapolis District Recruiting Command. He also commanded a company within the U.S. Army Recruiting Battalion. After completing his assignment, Austin attended Auburn University to complete his master’s in Education. After completing his assignment, he was assigned to the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, New York. He served as a company tactical officer. After completing the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth (Kansas), he was assigned the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum (New York), where he was the S-3 (Operations) and then the executive officer for 2nd Battalion 22nd Infantry. Later, he was the Executive Officer of 1st Brigade, 10th Mountain Division Light Infantry and then as Director of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security at Fort Drum, New York.

Austin served from September 2003 until August 2005 as the Commanding General of the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), with duty as Commander, Combined Joint Task Force 180, during the War in Afghanistan. His next position was Chief of Staff of the United States Central Command at MacDill AFB, in Tampa, Florida, from September 2005 until October 2006.
