She was the chief labor counsel and labor policy director for House Democrats from 2015 to 2017.

In 2017, Watson returned to Bloomington and began teaching constitutional law at the Indiana University Maurer School of Law while running for Congress.

Watson worked briefly as an employment lawyer at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, before joining the Workplace Flexibility 2010 team at Georgetown Law School. Here she created policies to better help low-wage workers balance their work and family responsibilities. After being promoted to the Georgetown Center on Poverty, Inequality, and Public Policy executive director, Watson led a group that proposed a wider range of public policy initiatives to address low-income workers’ needs.
