Brunner began her career in television in 1985 at WCIA-TV, a CBS affiliate in Champaign–Urbana. Brunner was the liaison between the TV station and the community for three years. Brunner produced and wrote public service announcements and hosted a talk program that covered Champaign’s community. She also coordinated the station’s speaker’s bureau and was a member of a weather team consisting of three women.
