Randall was born in Queens (New York City), New York. Randall is a graduate of Hampshire College Summer Studies Mathematics. She also graduated from Stuyvesant High School, where she was a classmate and fellow physicist Brian Greene. Randall won the 1980 Westinghouse Science Talent Search first prize at 18 years old. She also earned an AB degree in physics (1983), and a PhD in theoretical particles physics (1987) at Harvard University under Howard Georgi.
Randall completed her graduate studies at Harvard and held professorships at MIT, Princeton University, before returning to Harvard in 2001. Professor Randall was both the first tenured Princeton physics professor and the first Harvard female theoretical physicist. Melissa Franklin was also the Harvard physics department’s first tenured woman.
