Randall was born in Queens (New York City), New York. Randall is a graduate of Hampshire College Summer Studies Mathematics. She also graduated from Stuyvesant High School, where she was a classmate and fellow physicist Brian Greene. Randall won the 1980 Westinghouse Science Talent Search first prize at 18 years old.
